The patient information produced by the College is certified by the PIF Trusted Information Creator Kitemark accreditation scheme run by Patient Information Forum (PIF) for measuring the quality of health information.

If 100 people have an anaesthetic and 10 feel sick afterwards, the risk may be described as 10 in 100 OR 1 in 10.

This is also the same as 10% (or 10 per cent).

Our risk infographic is a summary which shows the common events and risks that healthy adult patients of normal weight face when having a general anaesthetic for routine surgery (specialist surgeries may carry different risks).

It is helpful to read this before your surgery. Your anaesthetist will discuss with you any risks that they believe to be more significant for you.

Alternatively, please read our series below on the risks associated with your anaesthetic.
