QI Education Guidance for the 2021 Curriculum
Quality Improvement (QI) aims to improve the quality and safety of patient care by applying a
systematic approach to understand the complex healthcare environment, to design, test and
implement change whilst using real-time measurement for improvement.
The 2021 Curriculum takes into consideration the General Medical Council (GMC) Generic
Professional Capabilities (2017) framework and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC)
Training for Better Outcomes strategy for developing QI capabilities as part of training.
This guidance aims to complement existing 2021 curriculum information and should be considered

Quality Network Career Development Programme 2026/27
The career development programme aims to deliver strategic objectives for the RCoA Quality Improvement Working Group as described within the RCoA Quality Improvement (QI) Strategy 2025-2028. The programme allows mentees to build QI leadership skills, and it offers the opportunity to engage in national level projects while complementing the 2021 RCoA curriculum. Mentees will work alongside regional leads in the RCoA Quality Network whose role is to enhance services and ensure better patient outcomes through collaboration, data and improvement science.
