QI Education Guidance for the 2021 Curriculum
Quality Improvement (QI) aims to improve the quality and safety of patient care by applying a
systematic approach to understand the complex healthcare environment, to design, test and
implement change whilst using real-time measurement for improvement.
The 2021 Curriculum takes into consideration the General Medical Council (GMC) Generic
Professional Capabilities (2017) framework and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC)
Training for Better Outcomes strategy for developing QI capabilities as part of training.
This guidance aims to complement existing 2021 curriculum information and should be considered

Advance your career in quality improvement - we are now recruiting mentees and mentors to the Quality Network Career Development Programme 2026/27
As a member of the network, mentees will:
- Build QI knowledge and develop QI leadership skills
- Gain hands-on experience in national QI projects that complement the RCoA curriculum
- Be mentored by a QI leader
- Collaborate and network with QI leaders at our events
- Access a dedicated workspace on the Futures platform to connect with regional leads and access QI resources
- Apply best practice to secure positive change on a local and regional level
Mentors will:
- Develop people management sklls
- Utilise the mentee's local expertise and knowledge to embed best practice and affect positive change on a local and regional level
- Utilise deanery level knowledge and insight held by mentees to develop local networks
