International Affiliate membership (Replacing TEE)

About International Affiliate membership

If you are a practising anaesthetist outside the UK, you can sit the Primary FRCA MCQ by applying for International Affiliate membership of the College. This replaces the previous Temporary Examination Eligibility (TEE) route.

Sitting the Primary FRCA MCQ Exam as an International Candidate

If you previously held TEE status and would like to sit the Primary FRCA MCQ, please apply for International Affiliate membership. Candidates who hold International Affiliate membership of the College and are a practising anaesthetist overseas will be eligible to sit the Primary FRCA MCQ. In addition:

  • If you pass the Primary FRCA MCQ, you will receive an official letter of acknowledgement recognising your success.
  • You will receive a range of other membership benefits, including online access to our membership publications and journals and discounted rates on our events, courses and e-learning resources.
  • Your membership fee will depend on which country you work, but in many cases, it will be less than the fee for the discontinued Temporary Examination Eligibility status.

Primary FRCA OSCE and SOE eligibility for international candidates

We have made the decision to discontinue Temporary Examinations Eligibility (TEE) so that we can prioritise places for doctors who are required to sit the FRCA as a mandatory part of their anaesthetic training in the UK. This means we can no longer offer the opportunity to sit the Primary FRCA OSCE & SOE as an international anaesthetist*. Only UK-registered medical practitioners with at least 12 months’ experience working in anaesthesia in the UK are eligible to sit the Primary FRCA OSCE and SOE.

Candidates must:

  • Be a medical practitioner registered in the UK
  • Have at least 12 months’ experience working in anaesthesia in the UK
  • Hold Associate Membership

Language

All FRCA examinations are conducted in English. Where a candidate’s first language is not English, the College recommends that an applicant’s communication and written skills in English are at least equivalent to the level at which a doctor could successfully pass the PLAB (Professional Linguistics Assessment Board) tests or at a level where they would expect to gain an average score of approximately 7.5/9 across all bands of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). However we do not require you to provide us with a certificate proving competency in English.

No. Only candidates who are:

  • Registered medical practitioners in the UK
  • Have at least 12 months of UK anaesthetic experience
  • Hold Associate Membership

are eligible to sit the OSCE and SOE.

These changes help ensure that FRCA exams remain focused on the needs of UK anaesthetic trainees and that candidates have the clinical context required for success. The OSCE and SOE exams are closely aligned with the UK training curriculum and workplace-based scenarios.
