Bernard Johnson Advisers (BJA)

Academic Anaesthesia

The main purpose of the BJA Academic Anaesthesia role is to support and enhance academic training in anaesthesia, ensuring high standards and consistency across the College’s training programmes. The role involves working closely with the Chair of the Training, Curriculum & Assessment Committee, College staff, and the Training team to provide expert advice, guidance, and support to trainees, trainers, and external organisations. It also includes collaborating with key stakeholders such as HEE, NIAA, and research teams to strengthen academic training and maintain alignment with national standards.
 

International Medical Graduates (IMG)

The main responsibility of the BJA IMG is to take an active role alongside the International Training team in providing advice, guidance and support to Anaesthetists in Training, trainers, members and external organisations on issues relating to overseas placements and training, as well as support to doctors trained overseas. 

Less Than Full Time Training (LTFT)

The main purpose of the BJA LTFT role is to provide high-level representation of matters relating to less than full time training across the UK, facilitate two-way communication to enable dissemination of information and coordination of feedback, and to share best practice in less than full time working policy in postgraduate medical education and training.

Training

The main purpose of this role is to provide high-level representation of matters relating to training in anaesthesia across the UK and facilitate two-way communication to enable dissemination of information and coordination of feedback between the College and its members. This role will allow anaesthetic doctors to approach an impartial adviser with expert knowledge about the training programme, CCT and portfolio (formerly CESR) pathways and related matters such as the FRCA examinations and national anaesthetics recruitment.

Dr Ruwanmali (Mali) De Silva
Bernard Johnson Adviser - International Medical Graduates

I arrived in the UK in 2005 and have lived in experience as an Overseas doctor in training, Deanery trainee and a SAS grade with great insight. Completed CCT in 2013 after obtaining a NTN number going through competitive interview.

Since then completed two terms as College Tutor in Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Final FRCA Examiner and Lead Tutor in RCOA. Currently I am the BJA for IMGs.

I am deeply committed to medical education, with strong passion for supporting resident doctors and guiding teams to achieve excellence through effective leadership and prompt resolution of challenges.

Dr Victoria Scott-Warren
Bernard Johnson Adviser - Less Than Full Time

I am a Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. I have previously held the positions of College Tutor at RMCH and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, where I was a module lead on the Paediatric Anaesthesia MSc. I currently work for the North-West Deanery as the Anaesthesia LTFT Training Programme Director, supporting around 220 Anaesthetists in Training. I have recently taken over the role of Bernard Johnson Advisor (LTFT) at the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Dr Simon Maguire
Bernard Johnson Adviser - Training

I qualified from the University of Manchester (Hacienda, Old Trafford..) in 1993 and did most of my training in the North West with stints in Devon and New Zealand.  Clinically, I am a general anaesthetist with interests in anaesthesia for major burns, obstetrics and paediatrics. I have been interested and active in supporting training as College Tutor, TPD and Regional Advisor in the NW. As Lead RAA, I had the pleasure of being co-opted onto College Council for a year.
