Biography

Dr Nirmala Soundararajan qualified from Osmania University in India in 1991 and did anaesthesia training in India and the UK. She was appointed as a consultant anaesthetist with an interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia at the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2008.

She served as a Programme Director for Foundation training for three years and as an anaesthetic TPD for 6 years. Nirmala is an examiner for the FRCA, an ACSA assessor, and a member of the RCoA’s CESR development and innovation group.

She has co-authored two GPAS chapters: Chapter 7 (ANTE) and 10 (Paediatric). She became one of the RCoA Lead RAAs in 2022.

Nirmala’s sub-speciality interests are in paediatric and vascular anaesthesia. She worked with the APAGBI as the Linkman scheme co-ordinator from 2016 to 2020 and is currently a home member on the APAGBI council. She represents the RCoA and the APAGBI on the steering group for the Intercollegiate document (ICD) on safeguarding children, young people, and looked after children.

Outside of medicine, she has an interest in philosophy and thinking skills. She is curious about emotional intelligence, motivation, and negotiation.
