Malignant hyperthermia, also called malignant hyperpyrexia, is a rare condition that runs in some families. In people who are affected, some anaesthetic drugs and gases can cause a rapid and dangerous rise in body temperature.

This leaflet explains why and how the anaesthetist manages your airway and breathing during anaesthesia.

Teenagers and young adults will find this leaflet useful for basic information on what to expect when they go into hospital for an operation with a general anaesthetic. It has been written by anaesthetists, working together with patient representatives, parents, and caregivers.
