In 1934 he was appointed non-resident anaesthetist, and consultant the following year when he was among the group to pass the first DA examination. He continued as a consultant at Guy’s after the war, but ill-health restricted his activities, and eventually his life.

Thoracic anaesthesia, both its practice and teaching, was his major interest, and he was one of the anaesthetists involved in the pioneer cardiac surgery at Guy’s Hospital with R C Brock.

Other biographical information

His parents were Austrian, but were known to be living in England by 1901, well before his birth. He disliked his given names, and was known as ‘Uncle’ (a name suiting his benevolent manner) to his Oxford friends and ‘James’ to relatives and colleagues. He married Gerda Johanna Lowenstein, and they had two sons. He liked good music, played the piano well and appreciated arts & literature.
