Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
He held house appountments at Guy’s after qualifying and became demonstrator in anaesthetics in 1933. In 1934 he was appointed non-resident anaesthetist, and consultant the following year when he was among the group to pass the first DA examination. During WW2 he was a specialist anaesthetist in the RAMC, later becoming advisor in anaesthetics to an Army Group. He continued as a consultant at Guy’s after the war, but ill-health restricted his activities, and eventually his life.
Professional interests and activities
Thoracic anaesthesia, both its practice and teaching, was his major interest, and he was one of the anaesthetists involved in the pioneer cardiac surgery at Guy’s Hospital with R C Brock.
Other biographical information
His parents were Austrian, but were known to be living in England by 1901, well before his birth. He disliked his given names, and was known as ‘Uncle’ (a name suiting his benevolent manner) to his Oxford friends and ‘James’ to relatives and colleagues. He married Gerda Johanna Lowenstein, and they had two sons. He liked good music, played the piano well and appreciated arts & literature.
