Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After house surgeon appointments in ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Ophtalmology at Manchester Royal Infirmary he became visiting anaesthetist there in 1929. Subsequently he also worked elsewhere in the area, notably St Mary’s and Withington Hospitals, and was Clinical Lecturer at Manchester University. He served in the RAMC during WW2, notably with the BEF in France in 1940 and, as a Brigadier, was consultant anaesthetist to India Command 1944-5. After the war he moved to London’s Charing Cross Hospital where he became Surgeon-Anaesthetist (the title for the director of the Department) in 1956, working also at Moorfields Hospital and retiring in 1968.

Professional interests and activities

There were early publications on ‘Avertin’ and spinal anaesthesia, a technique he continued to use even after the ‘Woolley & Roe case’ undermined its reputation. He was primarily responsible for the establishment of a separate Division of Anaesthesia at Charing Cross Hospital and the acquisition of suitable accommodation for the department. He continued his involvement with the military after WW2, receiving the TD with Clasp in 1951. Examiner for the DA(RCP&S), 1962-8.
