Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After qualification Russell was a House Officer at Dartford Co. Hospital (Guy’s Sector E.M.S.), followed by Resident Anaesthetist at South Hants & Southampton Hospital. In 1942 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving as a Captain in Africa, the Middle East, Greece and Austria. On demobilisation in 1946 he undertook the post of Casualty Officer at the Royal Northern Hospital, Holloway. The following year he was appointed as an anaesthetist to the West Middlesex County Hospital, Isleworth, where he proceeded to be Senior Registrar for 1948-49. Then in 1950 he was appointed (the first) Consultant Anaesthetist to the Hartlepool Group of Hospitals, in which post he remained until his retirement in 1977. Over the next five years he undertook occasional locum work in various hospitals.
Professional interests and activities
He was a member of the British Medical Association, the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland, and the North of England Society of Anaesthetists. He set up anaesthetic services at Hartlepool General Hospital, Cameron Hospital, and St Hilda’s Hospital.
Other biographical information
In retirement he enjoyed philately, and playing golf, snooker, and bridge, as well as tending to his garden in Hartlepool. He passed away aged 94 years, survived by his wife Isabel, three children and two grandchildren.
