Professional life and career

After obtaining the triple qualification and LDS, RCSEd in 1913, Gibbs held resident jobs at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. Then he joined the RAMC, serving in France and Italy throughout the First World War. After the war, he returned to Edinburgh and established himself in consultant dental practice combined with practising anaesthetics. He was appointed surgeon to the dental department of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 1927 and also anaesthetist thereto in the same year. In this dual capacity he served for the next thirty years until his retirement.   

Professional interests and activities

In his private practice Gibbs’ services as dental consultant and anaesthetist were esteemed. He was elected FRCPEd in 1938. When the Association of Anaesthetists of Edinburgh began in 1945, Gibbs was elected its first President, serving as such until 1947. He was elected FDS, RCSEd in 1951, and was examiner in dental surgery and anaesthetics, as well as convenor of the Dental Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Moreover, he was a member of the General Dental Council.  Notably, he served as President of the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists for 1955-56.

Other biographical information

Gibbs enjoyed literature, music, golf, hill walking and fly fishing. He was an elder in the Kirk in Scotland. Said to preserve “a youthfulness of spirit”, he was survived by a son and a daughter.
