Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
Ivan was born in Sandbach, Cheshire in 1912. His father died in 1923 when Ivan was 11yrs old. After his school years at Charterhouse, Ivan qualified from Cambridge University and the London Hospital in 1937. He apparently had 12 months sick leave due to tuberculosis of the spine in 1934 undergoing an Albee’s bone graft whilst at medical school.
From 1937-39 he undertook his House officer posts and was a “Receiving Room Officer” then Junior Resident Anaesthetist at the London Hospital. He also undertook a voyage to Australia as a ships surgeon in 1939.
With the outbreak of war he entered the RAMC achieving the rank of Major as a specialist Anaesthetist from 1939-45. It is not absolutely clear where he undertook his war service, but he has indicated he lived in India and Ceylon for 3 years as part of his war service. He became married in 1945 whilst based in Madras, India.
Following war service he undertook a supernumary registrar post at the London Hospital until October 1946, whereupon he was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Waterloo Hospital 1946 until 1948. He then became a consultant at the Moorfields Eye Hospital and Hounslow Hospital in London until about 1978. He also appears to have worked for periods during this time at the East End Maternity Hospital, Putney Hospital and the Queen Mary’s Hospital in Stratford London. He would have reached his retirement age of 65 years in 1977.
