Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
Gordon Lavery Evans was born in Greenford, Middlesex in 1916; his father was a research chemist and mother a nurse. His education was at Westminster School in London after which in 1939 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge obtaining a BA and then entered Westminster Hospital Medical School qualifying in 1943. Coincidentally there was overlapping by his younger brother Darell, who also graduated at the same time. Following medical school he undertook initial house officer posts at Westminster Hospital and Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital, Mansfield. In 1944 he moved to Borough General Hospital in Ipswich as an assistant RSO and anaesthetist followed by a post as Resident Anaesthetist at the Royal Infirmary in Leicester from August 1945 to March 1946. Dr. Evans then worked in general practice in Salop and Bradford, whilst also undertaking anaesthesia sessions for two years, obtaining the DA in 1946.
In 1948 he was appointed as a consultant at the Bradford group of hospitals where he stayed until his retirement from clinical practice in 1981. Answering the question in his self submitted biographical form about why he took up anaesthesia Dr Evans wrote “as a junior surgeon I thought the standard of anaesthesia was very poor and that I could do better”.
Professional interests and activities
During his time at medical school he undertook some part-time lecturing of the chiropody students at the Chelsea Polytechnic. Whilst working as a consultant, he served time as head of the department at Bradford for several years. He was also a member of the Yorkshire Society of Anaesthetists and served a tenureship as President from 1964 to 1965. Following retirement from clinical practice he undertook a period as Chairman of Abbeyfield House until 1986.
Other biographical information
In his early years he was an enthusiastic cyclist and athlete; he also rowed for his school, college and hospital. He enjoyed the scouts and in later years became a scoutmaster. He developed numerous hobbies including beagling, calligraphy, glass engraving and theology to name a few. In 1943 he married Mary who taught domestic science. Gordon passed away in 1995, at the age of 78years, at Shipley in Yorkshire, survived by his wife and two daughters.
