Publication of Guidance on supervision arrangements for anaesthetists

Published: 29/07/2021

The Royal College of Anaesthetists is pleased to announce the publication of Guidance on supervision arrangements for anaesthetists.

The guidance brings together in one document existing guidance embedded in other College documents such as the curriculum and the supervision of SAS anaesthetists in NHS hospitals. It defines the different levels of supervision and the role of the supervisor. It also outlines the specific arrangements for Anaesthetists in Training, SAS doctors and Anaesthesia Associates.

Robust supervision arrangements are essential to patient safety and departments should regularly audit their own system using the Cappuccini test outlined in this document.
