Macintosh Professorships
The Royal College of Anaesthetists is delighted to announce details of two Macintosh Professorships approved by the Nominations Committee.
This prestigious lecture and title are awarded on the recommendation of the Board of the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA). Awards are made in recognition of outstanding contributions to the wider field of anaesthesia by a senior academic or clinician.
Dr Andrew Conway Morris is a Medical Research Council Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Division of Anaesthesia at the University of Cambridge. He has an international reputation in the field of critical care research. He was elected chair of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine’s Infection Section in 2021, having previously been the deputy chair since 2018. His lecture “Addressing the challenges of pneumonia in the intensive care unit” describes his work in this field over a period of 15 years, set it in the context of wider literature and looks forward to what the future may hold for pneumonia management in the next decade.

Dr Thomas G Smith is a clinician-scientist specialising in aerospace medicine, cardiopulmonary physiology and anaesthetics. He is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and has worked extensively in aeromedical critical care as a flying doctor. He is a former Rhodes Scholar and Churchill Fellow. As he puts it, his lecture “Anaesthetists and aerospace medicine in a new era of human spaceflight” aims to entertain and inspire. It will expand on several research studies that he has led and will be vividly brought to life with extensive audio-visuals drawn from his research.
