Postgraduate career

Doubly qualified in dentistry and medicine, he first worked in the Dental Hospital in Edinburgh, followed by being resident medical and dental officer at the Royal Albert Hospital, Lancaster. Next he was resident anaesthetist at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. From April 1940 he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve until demobilised in April 1946 with the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander. Obtaining the DA in 1946 he became anaesthetist for the Perthshire Hospitals and Bridge of Earn Hospital, for both of which he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist in 1948. He remained in this role until his retirement.

Professional interests and activities

Technically excellent, he engendered confidence in his staff and he also enjoyed much private dental anaesthetic practice in both Perth and Dundee. He was President of the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists for 1957-58. Notably in 1958 he published a paper on reporting and handling of ‘deaths under anaesthetics’ in Scotland (BJA; 30: 85-94). In 1967 he was appointed senior lecturer in anaesthetics at Dundee University.

Other biographical information

Described as “always pleasant, kindly and considerate to patients and colleagues”, Lawrie continued working as a consultant after retirement. However he took great interest in his garden. He was survived by his wife Trixie and their son Bobby.
