Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Roussel was a casualty officer and resident anaesthetist, followed by house physician at St Thomas’s Hospital in London. He continued to work there for two more years from September 1937 as a senior resident anaesthetist and then a resident physician in the private wing. From September 1939 he worked for four years as an anaesthetist in the Emergency Medical Service. Next, in September 1943 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, proceeding to serve in Europe and the Far East, and achieving the rank of Major. On demobilisation he was appointed in March 1947 as a senior anaesthetist at Epsom County Hospital in Surrey. Finally, in 1948 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist at Epsom District Hospital, where he remained until his retirement in 1975.

Professional interests and activities

In Epsom he was chairman of the hospital medical committee for two periods of 3 years, followed by being medical representative on the district management team. 

Other biographical information

He married Beryl Cartwright in 1939 and they had a son and a daughter. In his working life his leisure interests were hockey and rifle shooting. In retirement he enjoyed gardening and foreign travel. He died at the age of 90 years at St Peter Port, Guernsey, survived by his family including 2 grandchildren.
