Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After qualifying Bain did house jobs at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, followed by a short period in general practice. The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 caused him to become a company officer at Scottish General Headquarters. He served in the RAMC as an anaesthetist in Crete, North Africa, Italy and Normandy, achieving the rank of Major. After demobilisation in 1946 he passed the DA and worked as staff anaesthetist to the Aberdeen hospitals. In 1950 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist for the Aberdeen teaching hospitals, where he remained until his retirement in 1968.  

Professional interests and activities

Bain was President of the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists for 1961-62.

Other biographical information

Bain was regarded by his colleagues and associates as someone they could turn to for support. He married Grace McIntyre, of the South African Nursing Service, in Cairo in 1942. For his distinguished service in the RAMC he was awarded the TD. Throughout his life he maintained his interest in rugby and golf, becoming a district selector in his later years. In the 1960s he was liaison officer to the South African and New Zealand touring rugby teams.
