Postgraduate career

After graduation North was casualty surgical house officer at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He then served as a medical officer in the RAF Volunteer Reserve until 1945, achieving the rank of Flight Lt. (Acting Squadron Leader). In 1946 he returned to work at Barts as Senior Resident Anaesthetist, also working at East Surrey County Hospital, Redhill. By 1947 he had anaesthetic duties at the Surrey CC Dental Clinics, St Luke’s Hospital in Guildford and the County Hospital, Farnham. His Consultant appointment in Guildford included duties at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. He remained in this post until his retirement in 1981.

Professional interests and activities

With Dr de Clive-Lowe he published in the journal Anaesthesia on the use of intravenous lidocaine and suxamethonium by continuous drip (1954), and intravenous lidocaine anaesthesia (1958). The results of their technique were presented at the 2nd World Congress of Anaesthesiologists, Toronto 1960. Later, North became Co-ordinator of the Department of Anaesthesia of the Guildford and Godalming Group of Hospitals.

Other biographical information

Regarded by his colleagues as a friendly man with a good sense of humour, he was passionate about golf. In 1965 he became captain of West Hill Golf Club, later an honorary member and secretary of the Old Paulines Golf Society. Sadly in his later years, his golfing was curtailed by progressive emphysema. He died aged 77, survived by his wife Loa, son John, and three granddaughters.
