Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After graduation he was a casualty officer and house surgeon at Liverpool Royal Infirmary, followed by house physician at the Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital. In 1939 he entered general practice in Sunderland, Co. Durham. By 1944 he was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist at Darlington Memorial Hospital and Durham County Hospital; he also served as an anaesthetist in the E.M.S. After the start of the NHS in 1948 he was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist at Dryburn Hospital, Durham. He remained in this post as a senior consultant until his retirement about 1978.
Professional interests and activities
At Dryburn Hospital he set up the anaesthetic department. In 1964 he was elected Chairman of the North of England Society of Anaesthetsts.
Other biographical information
Gewater married Sonia Bawlinson in 1941 and they had three sons. He enjoyed music, particularly 1930s jazz; and he played golf until he was 80. He died suddenly at the age of 89, survived by his family.
