Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After graduation Godwin completed an initial six month House Physician post at St. James Hospital in Balham with some anaesthesia during this placement. Next he undertook a couple of assistant General Practitioner posts, initially in Eastham in London followed by Ruislip in Surrey between October 1937 and May 1940.
He then entered the military for war service, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant RAMC in May 1940 and gaining the rank of Major and becoming a specialist in anaesthesia in the army medical service until March 1946. There is no currently available information about the theatres in which his war service occurred.
On demobilisation he returned to general practice between 1946 and 1952, additionally undertaking anaesthesia. In May 1952 he was appointed as a consultant in anaesthesia at the Croyden Group of Hospitals, where he remained until March 1978 when he retired at the age of 65 years.
Professional interests and activities
In 1958 he published ‘Anaesthesia for Nurses’, a small book based on lectures given to nurses and midwives. He undertook several management roles with Croydon. He was also Faculty Tutor. Answering the question “why did you take up anaesthesia?” … he answered that he became interested during his student days.
Other biographical information
Dr Godwin was born in Vancouver, Canada where his parents had settled for a short while before returning to England; his father was a lawyer and author. He listed his hobbies and interests in retirement as rowing, woodwork, gardening and photography. He married Hannah (Nancy) Rook a physiotherapist in 1940. She predeceased him in 2005. He had three sons and one daughter. Further information would be welcomed as the researches for this obituary have revealed limited information .
