Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation he lived in Glasgow, but on 19January 1941 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Lieut. and served during WW2 in India, Burma and Ceylon. After demobilisation in 1945 he was appointed as Resident Anaesthetist at Killearn Hospital, Stirlingshire. By 1948 he was a Registrar at Killearn Hospital and also Visiting Anaesthetist to the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. In 1950 he became Anaesthetist for the Neurosurgical Unit at Killearn Hospital, and about 1952 he was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist there as well as Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital, Gartnavel. By 1969 he became Senior Consultant Anaesthetist at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow. He remained in this post until 1981, when he retired as Emeritus Consultant Anaesthetist.

Professional interests and activities

Granat was a founder member of the Neuroanaesthetists’ Travelling Club. In 1967 he was President of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Society of Anaesthetists. He was co-author of a paper on the measurement of local blood flow in the cerebral cortex from clearance of xenon-133 published in 1964. He was a pioneer in the use of hypothermia and hypotension in neurosurgery, and was esteemed by his colleagues for his calm and efficient management of crises in neurosurgery.  

Other biographical information

He married Bella Marco in 1948. Remembered by his colleagues as a man of wit and a dry sense of humour, he died in Glasgow at the age of 74, survived by his wife.
