Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After graduation Hardie was house surgeon at Durham County Hospital in 1938, followed by assistant medical officer at Lewisham Hospital 1938-40. He then served in the RAMC 1940-46, becoming a Specialist Anaesthetist. After demobilisation he was appointed Anaesthetic Registrar at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. There he was promoted to Assistant Honorary Anaesthetist the following year and then appointed Consultant with duties also at St Luke’s Hospital. He remained in this post until his retirement in 1979.
Professional interests and activities
On retirement he was appointed Emeritus Consultant Anaesthetist, Royal Surrey County Hospital. His experience and knowledge of the Surrey group of hospitals was drawn upon for the booklet on its history in 1982.
Other biographical information
Alexander Hardie was born in Lahore as his father was superintendent of the botanical gardens there. He married Laura Mary Jones (a teacher of dancing) in Worcestershire in 1940. After retirement he moved to Bournemouth
