Anaesthetists as Educators Programme

Mission Statement

To inspire, inform and support the improvement of clinical educators in the delivery of high quality education for anaesthetists;  in service of world-class patient care.

The Anaesthetists as Educators Programme offers a number of professional development courses and educational resources in the areas of teaching and learning in the workplace; assessment and feedback; and educational supervision and appraisal.

Courses are also available on anaesthetists non-technical skills (ANTS), which will align with the new curriculum and Simulation (SIM) which can be taken at any time during your career.

Courses are held regularly throughout the year in the form of one or two day workshops. All of the courses are taught by practising anaesthetists.

To book or register your interest in upcoming courses view the Anaesthetists as Educators list in our events calendar. For further information on any of these courses, or on the Academy of Medical Educators programme, please contact events@rcoa.ac.uk.

Courses Available

Anaesthetists as Educators: an introduction provides an introduction to post graduate medical education in anaesthesia. The course is suitable for trainees, SAS doctors and consultants who have had no previous training in teaching or medical education.

This course provides the ground work for the Anaesthetists as Educators: Teaching and Training in the Workplace course, which is a natural follow on.

The course provides:

  • An overview of the educational landscape as it is today: regulatory bodies and their interrelationships, governance of medical education, where anaesthetists delivering training fit in.
  • An introduction to how adults learn.
  • How to teach: in theatre and by giving lectures.
  • An introduction to clinical and educational supervision from the trainees' point of view, including appraisal.
  • Overview of assessment in anaesthesia, including workplace-based assessment and where it fits in.
  • Principles of recognition and dealing with the trainee with problems.
  • A brief introduction to Anaesthetists non-technical skills (ANTS)
  • A brief introduction to Simulation Unplugged (Sim)

The RCoA Anaesthetists as Educators Programme can support trainers in meeting the requirements for GMC Recognition and Approval of Trainers. The course content is mapped to the GMC’s seven domains and participation in this course will provide supporting evidence towards the GMC approval process for named educational supervisors and named clinical supervisors.

Run in conjunction with SEAUK Anaesthetists as Educators: advanced educational supervision (ES) is a one day course on educational supervision, consisting of talks covering the governance of education, revalidation of trainees and trainers and workshops on effective educational supervision, SUIs, doctors in difficulty, feedback and assessment.

The workshops will give participants time to discuss the problems and challenges of educational supervision in anaesthesia in the context of the current climate and help them increase the effectiveness of the educational supervision they provide.

It is suitable for all educational supervisors, especially those that want an update for revalidation.

The one-day anaesthetists non-technical skills (ANTS) course is designed for trainees, SAS doctors and Consultants, who wish to enhance their understanding of the human factors and non-technical skills as applied to Anaesthesia. This course is suitable for all anaesthetists, who wish to become more familiar with using the ANTS framework for observation and feedback on non-technical skills in others.

The course will align with the GMC's report to the four UK governments to ensure a sustainable model for anaesthetic training, agile enough to respond to evolving patient need and service opportunities, as well as resulting in a more flexible  workforce.

In line with the new curriculum, the emphasis will be on training to be future leaders  and to work well in multi-disciplinary teams which all doctors will need to achieve by the time they have completed their training.

Topics to be covered:

  • The theoretical concepts underlying each of the four categories in the ANTS framework (Situation Awareness, Decision Making, Task Management, Team Working) will be discussed in short presentations.
  • Videos of simulated clinical scenarios will be observed to facilitate scrutiny of behaviours related to each of the non-technical skills categories.
  • Facilitated discussion relating to observed performances in the videos will help participants to link behaviours to categories in the framework, and to use the ANTS tool for rating behaviours.
  • A final session will discuss aspects of using ANTS in clinical practice, with tips and suggestions for building up confidence and experience of using ANTS in the workplace.

Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) and GMC Recognition of Trainers

The Anaesthetist as Educators Courses, AaE: An introduction and AaE Teaching and Training in the workplace, were officially accredited by the Academy of Medical Educators in January 2014.

Application for Membership
The AoME’s membership application form offers those that have completed the accredited AaE courses a shortened application process. You can access the online application form here. Those applying for membership via the accreditation route must have completed the accredited course within the previous two years. The course must have been accredited by the Academy of Medical Educators at the date of completion. All other applicants should use the standard route for application. Please ensure that you read the Information and Guidance for Applicants before completing your application. This guidance should be read in conjunction with other supporting documentation available to applicants: the Professional Standards 2014 and guidance for referees and peer reviewers.

If you have attended both AaE: An Introduction and AaE: Teaching and Training in the Workplace and have completed the associated pre and post coursework, you must complete the first section of the application including the short reflective piece (no more than 500 words) exploring your professional practice as a Medical Educator, based on the Core Values of the Academy of Medical Educators. You do not have to complete the 'professional development, peer review of educational practice and reflection' section of the online application form. Once you have uploaded evidence of completing the accredited AaE courses (e.g. CPD certificates) the form will simply skip past the unnecessary sections for your application.

Instead you will only be required to provide confirmation from the College (e.g. your CPD certificates) that you have successfully completed the accredited courses and to sign a declaration that you support the aims and values of the Academy.

Membership of the Academy allows the use of the post-nominal letters MAcadMEd and signifies that the individual has been judged to meet the Academy's Standards.

Should you require any further clarification or help regarding this please feel free to contact us: events@rcoa.ac.uk

The content of the AaE: An Introduction, Teaching and Training in the Workplace and Advanced Educational Supervision courses are mapped to the seven domains and participation in the courses will provide supporting evidence towards the GMC approval process for trainers.

Individual Deaneries have their own requirements for GMC approval and you should check with your individual deanery that these courses meet their requirements.
