Biography
I am a consultant anaesthetist in the north-east of England. I qualified in 1992 from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and completed my training in the Northern Region.
I was appointed consultant anaesthetist in 2002.
My main sub-specialty interest is obstetric anaesthesia, and I spend the rest of time in ENT and orthopaedic trauma.
I was elected to Association board in 2014 and have served as Honorary Secretary (twice) and Vice President. I have focussed much of my time of patient safety. I led the development and introduction of the Association’s Quick Reference Handbook, now a staple of most theatres. I have been chair or member of the working parties producing several key Association guidelines, including Implementing Human Factors, Standards of Monitoring and Implementing Advance Care Directives. I have been chair of the Association’s Safety Committee and have been a long-standing core member of the Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group.
Most of my ‘spare’ time is devoted to family. In an ideal world, this would be combined with travel to interesting and iconic locations worldwide, sampling modest amounts of fine wine along the way; currently only some of it is spent this way, but I’m working on it.
