Biography
Claire qualified from Guys Hospital Medical School in 1987 and trained in anaesthesia in London, undertaking fellowships in paediatric anaesthesia and advanced airway anaesthesia. She was appointed as consultant paediatric anaesthetist at Guys and St Thomas, Evelina Hospital in 1997. Her areas of interest within anaesthesia are paediatric, cardiac and ENT.
She was clinical lead for paediatrics and theatres during the development of Evelina London, and has been involved in postgraduate education throughout her consultant career in college, Deanery and HEE roles as well as 11 years as FRCA examiner.
She was Associate Dean for London Deanery in 2008, Head of London Specialty School of Anaesthesia and ICM 2015-2020, co -chair of the Academy Board and Chair of the ICM STC. She has an interest in developing clinical leadership for post- graduate doctors in training and co -developed leadership and transformation fellowships with Deloittes and CASS business school where she was also medical director of the Executive Medical Management Leadership Masters degree.
Claire is a strong advocate for leadership by women doctors. Claire upholds the key role of anaesthetists in perioperative medicine and particularly in developing and leading preoperative anaesthesia to improve outcomes for patients undergoing surgery.
Claire has been Vice Chair for Education at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges since July 2026.
