Biography

Colonel Giles qualified from Glasgow University Medical School in 1996, joining the Army as a medical student in 1993.

Having passed "P Company" selection, he has spent his military time providing medical support to airborne forces and other smaller units. He has extensively deployed across the globe from medical support to expeditions within the Arctic circle, picking up casualties on the frontline on the MERT helicopter in Afghanistan to setting up a UN hospital in support of 150,000 refugees in South Sudan.

His anaesthesia training was completed in the Southwest, Edinburgh and Birmingham, undertaking fellowships in hepatic transplantation and paediatric anaesthesia. His areas of interest are in HPB, paediatric and trauma and he is the UK lead for anaesthesia for military and ballistic injuries building on the foundations of a Durham University MD in translational research on ballistic casualty resuscitation.

His research portfolio is supplemented by 3 decades in postgraduate education in a variety of roles culminating in now being the RA for all military residents across the UK.

Col Giles' primary objective is ensuring there are military anaesthetists ready to deploy to support any military and Government activity anywhere in the world. His focus over and above preparing his teams to ensure they can deploy, is their wellbeing and developing the military anaesthetists of the future to deliver best patient care in austere and isolated locations.
