Members of clinical staff working within the recovery area should be certified to a standard equivalent to intermediate life support providers, and training should be provided.⁴⁴ An advanced life support provider or an anaesthetist should be available at all times.

The establishment of regional networks for paediatric anaesthesia should facilitate joint CPD and refresher training in paediatric anaesthesia and resuscitation. In a true emergency situation involving a child requiring urgent neurosurgery for a deteriorating condition admitted to an ‘adult only’ neurosurgical service, the most appropriate surgeon, anaesthetist and intensivist available would be expected to provide life saving care, including emergency resuscitation and surgery.³⁰
