Working in Low and Middle Income Countries

Working in Low and Middle Income Countries

The College supports Anaesthetists in Training undertaking out-of-programme posts in low and middle-income countries.

You should consider the following questions before considering undertaking a placement:

  • what do I want to do?
  • what can I offer?
  • what will host countries gain from my undertaking a placement?
  • will I be contributing to a long term, sustainable project?
  • what will I get out of the experience?
  • what are the needs and expectations where I am planning to go?
  • how long can I go for?
  • what will happen when I return to the UK?

Anaesthetists undertaking placements overseas do so at their own risk, and we advised that all those planning a placement follow the advice given by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Please be advised that placements are not provided by the College, but by external organisations. Therefore all contractual agreements will be with these organisations.

Further information about the practicalities of undertaking such placements can be found on the BMA website.
