Global Fellowship Scheme - when you are in the UK

Information surrounding support for GFS doctors while in the UK

When you arrive in the UK, we would remind you to:

  • ensure you arrange and attend your ID check with the GMC (you will not be able to start work without this)
  • provide any information as required by the Human Resource department of your Trust
  • comply with any instructions given to you by the UKVI (if any)
  • provide the College with a scanned copy of your visa, and confirm the date that you will start your placement.

 When you start your placement

When you begin your placement, support should be in place to help you settle in, including:

  • a hospital induction
  • a departmental induction (this may be incorporated into the hospital induction, depending on local set up)
  • an initial meeting with your named educational supervisor.

If you do not receive any of the above, please let us know.

The College while you are in the UK

The College offer the following support:

  • Membership that provides access to a range of membership benefits, including the Lifelong Learning Platform (LLP), academic journals and discounts on our events and courses. Please complete the membership registration form to apply.
  • Access to simulation courses to help integrate you into the NHS.
  • The New to the NHS meeting is a free College event designed to help newly appointed International Medical Graduates (IMGs) understand their role and responsibilities within the NHS. The morning session includes the GMC's Welcome to UK Practice workshop and afternoon sessions include interactive workshops and discussions specific to IMGs. We will email you the dates when available.
  • The College cannot advise on individual clinical cases or medicolegal issues. Support for individual practitioners is in the domain of the medical defence organisations and the College strongly advises anaesthetists and related medical professionals to obtain appropriate independent insurance and membership of a medical defence organisation. Useful links to support and wellness organisations can be found here.
  • Please email your progress reports, including six-monthly reports, to us. These help us monitor your progress, identify any additional support needed, and gather feedback on your post and training environment.
  • We run an annual survey for GFS doctors to collect anonymous feedback on your placement.  This is part of our Quality Assurance (QA) mechanisms so your input helps us ensure supportive environments and high-quality training, and informs future placement approvals. We also send a similar survey to GFS hosts to evaluate the support provided.
  • Discounted rate to attend College events.
  • The College is here to support you. If you have any concerns about your placement, please raise these first with your Educational Supervisor. If they remain unresolved, please contact us for further support.
  • A Leadership Group made up of clinicians who are available to provide support/advice as required. They can be contacted through the International Training team.

If you have any queries or require further information, please contact us via [email protected] or call us on +44 (0)20 7092 1550.
