Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
Full details of his early postgraduate career have not been found, but he was house surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary and resident medical officer at Crumshall Hospital & Monsall Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Manchester. In 1938 he became resident anaesthetist at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and was based there for the rest of his career. In 1941 he was appointed honorary anaesthetist at Yately Hospital, and assistant at the Royal Berkshire, being promoted to the full staff in 1943. His National Service was deferred, and during WW2 he maintained the anaesthetic service in Reading almost single handedly. Service in the RAMC (1946-8) was at the military neurosurgical unit at Wheatley, near Oxford, after which he returned to Reading to lead the development of the department there until his retirement in 1971.

Worked on patient administered analgesia with trichloroethylene during the 1940s.

He married Betty Fleet Goldsmith MD in 1939, and they had three sons. His wife and one of their sons pre-deceased him. More information on all aspects of this man’s life and career would be welcome.
