Pre-registration house posts in Redhill were followed by a short-service commission in the Royal Navy (he was a cadet as a student). After a period of general duties in the West Indies he started to train as an anaesthetist in UK Naval Hospitals. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commonder he served as a specialist in Gibralter before leaving the Navy in 1973. He was then registrar in Southampton and senior registrar in Leeds before being appointed consultant in Bradford in 1977. He was about to become departmental chair when his Lymphoma presented and he died in 1989.

Married to Vicki, a Bart’s nurse, they had three children (Nicholas, Katherine & Peter) and were at the forefront of hospital and departmental social activities. He was a talented musician and other interests included being an active member of (and medical officer to) the Keighley & Worth Steam Railway and fell walking.
