A founder member, and early president, of the Society of Anaesthetists of the South-Western Region he used his experience of nerve blocks in the management of chronic and terminal pain. Subsequently he was primarily responsible for the opening of the Nuffield
Other biographical information
A large and gentle man he was known for his kindness to patients. Hobbies included photography, fishing, wine-making, electronics and playing the clarinet. He married Betty Lisa Isabelle May Welham and they had two sons, one of whom (John) also became a consultant anaesthetist.
