Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After qualifying Alsop was house physician, Miller General Hospital, SE London and house surgeon, Hampstead & NW London General Hospital before joining a practice in Oxford in 1931. For a while he was also clinical assistant in anaesthetics at the Radcliffe Infirmary, but became obstetric house physician there before returning to practice with a clinical assistantship in obstetrics. However, he returned to anaesthetics as honorary assistant a short time before Macintosh arrived in 1937, and was honorary anaesthetist by 1939. During WW2 he served with the RAMC in France before Dunkirk, in Normandy & North Africa, and recording his clinical experiences with a surgical colleague, S O Aylett (BMJ 1945; 1: 547-51). He returned to his Oxford appointments after the war, but became a full-time anaesthetist in 1948, as well as clinical lecturer to the University, until retirement in 1967.
Professional interests and activities
More information would be welcome although the award of the TD in 1951 indicates that he was involved in the TA after WW2. The book (see below) written by Aylett, his wartime surgical colleague, has many positive comments about Alsop’s clinical skills.
Other biographical information
The son of a leather merchant originally from Glasgow, he married Margaret Shaw, and they had a son and a daughter. At Cambridge he rowed (stroke of College second boat) and won a College Blue for Tennis.
