Sharon Drake appointed Interim Chief Executive of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
Deputy CEO and Director of Clinical Quality and Research, Sharon Drake, has taken up the role of Interim Chief Executive of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Sharon steps into the role following the departure of Jonathan Brüün, who will become CEO of the Royal College of Physicians in January 2026. Sharon will serve as Interim Chief Executive until a permanent appointment is made. An open recruitment process is underway and is expected to conclude in early 2026.
Sharon previously led the College as Interim CEO in 2020 and has been with the organisation for 17 years. Her experience will provide continuity and guidance for both employees and members during this transition.
Dr Claire Shannon, President, said:
“I am delighted to welcome Sharon as Interim Chief Executive. My colleagues on Council and I have worked with Sharon for many years, and she is ideally placed to lead the College’s executive team through this period of transition.
“Sharon brings extensive expertise across our work to safeguard patient care and champion our members. As Director of Clinical Quality and Research and Deputy Chief Executive, she has been a central part of the College’s leadership for many years and has previously served as Interim CEO.
“I look forward to continuing to work closely with Sharon in the months ahead.”
