RCoA responds to The Royal College of Physicians calling for more research to be conducted in NHS trusts

The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) supports the call by the Royal College of Physicians for more research to be undertaken within NHS Trusts across England.

Clinical research is the backbone of patient care and the NIAA Health Services Research Centre (HSRC) at the College is working to expand opportunities for supporting anaesthetists in research as well as promoting high quality, well-funded projects in anaesthesia.

Through initiatives and projects including the UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network, National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA), the Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme (PQIP) as well as the RCoA National Audit Projects (NAPs) and the Sprint National Anaesthesia Projects (SNAPs) our research improves the quality of care for patients. 

Dr Janice Fazackerley Vice President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, said:

“Clinical research is integral to the work undertaken by doctors across all medical specialties and it is encouraging to see support from the Royal College of Physicians calling for more time, funding and promotion of research projects.

“Research in anaesthesia can translate into significant improvements in perioperative pathways from the decision to operate all the way through resuming normal activity.

“At the RCoA, we will continue to encourage and support Trusts to provide opportunities for clinicians to undertake, high quality research that more patients benefit from improvements in care.”
