Chief Executive Jono Brüün to leave the RCoA for a new leadership role

Published: 18/06/2025

After five years at the RCoA, our Chief Executive Jono Brüün will step down in December to become Chief Executive of the Royal College of Physicians.

Since taking up the role in 2020, Jono has played a pivotal part in steering the College through the challenges of the pandemic and shaping its long-term strategic direction.

Reflecting on his time at the RCoA, Jono said:

“It’s been an honour to contribute to the leadership of the Royal College of Anaesthetists over the last five years. We’ve faced significant challenge and change – from responding to the pandemic to securing our long-term financial sustainability – and I’m immensely proud of how the College has grown and thrived, becoming a confident organisation fit for the future.

“I’d like to pay tribute to my colleagues, with whom I’ve worked closely since I joined the team in January 2020. I know they’ll remain focused on their mission to deliver our commitments to our members and our specialties in the years ahead.

“I’m also grateful to the Council Members, Trustees, Fellows and Members I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years. The number of people who volunteer their time to contribute to the College and the specialty is truly awe-inspiring. I have learned a huge amount, helped to deliver some important initiatives, and seen our organisational culture develop into something of which I'm very proud, and which I will miss greatly.”

President and Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr Claire Shannon said:

"I’m grateful to Jono for everything he has contributed to the RCoA. His expertise and ambition have helped strengthen our College, placing us on a secure footing from which to deliver on our commitments to members, our specialties and the public.

“Jono’s leadership has been marked by a collaborative spirit and a strong drive for excellence - clearly reflected in the way he has worked with Council and our Trustees to modernise the College and ensure it remains transparent, accountable, and member-focused.

“On a personal note, I’ve deeply valued Jono’s support and guidance during my time as President. His positive outlook and commitment to fostering an open, responsive culture have benefited both Council and our employees. We will miss him greatly, but I’m pleased to see him take on this new opportunity at the Royal College of Physicians, where I’ve no doubt he will continue to lead with distinction."
