Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

After graduation Patterson was House Surgeon, House Physician, Senior House Surgeon, and Assistant Casualty Officer at Royal Hospital, Sheffield. All  his subsequent posts were in Sheffield. In 1930 he entered general practice. From 1937 onwards he was Honorary Anaesthetist at Sheffield Royal Hospital. During WW2 he served in the Emergency Medical Service including Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He gave up general practice in 1948 to become a full time consultant anaesthetist at United Sheffield Hospitals and Sheffield Region. He retired at 65 in 1970, but continued with locum sessions for some years.

Professional interests and activities

Member BMA, AAGBI, Fellow RSM, founder member Sheffield & East Midlands Society of Anaesthetists. Active in setting up academic anaesthesia in Sheffield.

Other biographical information

He married Dr Dorothy Colver in April 1931and they had four children; the eldest son became a general practitioner in Leicester. A low handicap golfer, he was a president of Hallamshire Golf Club. He was a founder member of Sheffield Bridge Club, and founder & first president of the Ulster Society in Sheffield.
