Professional life and career

Postgraduate career

​After qualifying Steen undertook house jobs at the London Hospital. In 1944 he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, where he engaged in anaesthetics at general hospitals and a field surgical unit and attained the rank of Captain. After demobilisation in 1947 he was senior resident anaesthetist at The London Hospital, and then entered general practice with his brother in Weymouth, Dorset. In 1950 he decided to specialise in anaesthesia and worked as a registrar at St George’s Hospital, followed by Senior Registrar in Anaesthetics at Bristol Royal Infirmary. He was appointed Consultant Anaesthetist to Southmead Hospital and the Bristol Clinical Area in 1952, remaining in this post until his retirement in 1980.

Professional interests and activities

​​He was a member of the British Medical Association and served as President of the Society of Anaesthetists of the South Western Region. In 1959 he obtained secondment for two years to Makerere College and Mulago Hospital in Uganda, where he trained medical assistants to administer anaesthesia. After returning to Southmead Hospital, he served as chairman of the medical staff committee and set up an epidural service in the newly formed university department of obstetrics. Regarded as an expert in the science and art of anaesthesia, he published several papers including a case report of hypertension due to an unsuspected  phaeochromocytoma. ​ 

Other biographical information

​​He married Ingeborg Gamper and they had three sons. A bibliophile with a gift for writing humorous verse, he had a ready and kindly wit which engendered success. He died at the age of 67 years, survived by his family.​
