Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After qualifying Mather undertook house jobs at Manchester Royal Infirmary and St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester. In 1924 he entered general practice in Lancaster, where for the next 25 years he was a Medical Officer and Public Vaccinator as well as Medical Officer to Lancaster Royal Grammar School. After passing the DA in 1946 he was appointed Honorary Anaesthetist to the Royal Infirmary, Lancaster. In 1950 he moved to Lincolnshire for the post of Consultant Anaesthetist to the Scunthorpe Group of Hospitals, where he remained until his retirement in 1964.
Professional interests and activities
He was a member of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland, and of the Lancaster Medical Society (President in 1948).
Other biographical information
He was a keen golfer for over 50 years. On retiring he spent five months of every winter in Tenerife with his wife. In his late 70s he taught himself to speak Spanish, French and German, and he was an epistle reader in both English and Spanish. He died in Norfolk at the age of 87 years, survived by children and grandchildren.
