Biography
Born in Iceland, Helgi Johannsson moved to the UK aged 12, and trained at St Bartholomew’s hospital. During his training he undertook an education and simulation fellowship and became a consultant at St Mary’s hospital in 2007.
His clinical interest lie in trauma, oesophagogastric surgery, obstetrics, bariatrics and general all-round anaesthesia and peri-operative care. He was clinical director of anaesthesia for Imperial 2012-2018, was elected to the Royal College of Anaesthetists council in 2018, served as Vice President until September 2024, and is sustainability lead for the RCoA. He was Associate Medical Director for medical education at Imperial.
