Joint response from RCoA and OAA on Independent National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation
The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and the Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association (OAA) note the publication of Baroness Amos’ final report from the independent National Maternity and Neonatal Investigation.
We recognise the experiences of the women, babies and families whose voices have informed this important report and thank everyone who contributed to the investigation.
However, we are disappointed that the review did not formally engage with either the RCoA or the OAA. Anaesthetic input was therefore limited, despite the central role anaesthetists play in the care of women with complex pregnancies and obstetric emergencies.
We are carefully considering the report and its recommendations for the delivery of safe, equitable and compassionate maternity care.
We look forward to working with our multidisciplinary colleagues, NHS organisations and government to support the implementation of recommendations that improve care for women and families, strengthen maternity services and support the staff who provide them.
