FICM becomes College of Intensive Care Medicine

Published: 01/07/2026

The Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine becomes the College of Intensive Care Medicine today, marking a significant moment in its evolution. This transition reflects the continued growth of intensive care medicine as a distinct specialty over the last 15 years.

The establishment of the new College recognises the specialty’s growing workforce, its central role within the NHS, and the breadth of expertise of its members. It provides a strong platform for increased representation of intensive care medicine for the benefit of patients, while building on the Faculty’s achievements in examinations, standard setting, education, membership, and more.

Continued partnership

Anaesthesia and intensive care medicine will always be closely connected. Our two Colleges will continue to work in partnership on cross-specialty training, joint guidance, research and patient safety initiatives, among many other areas. Our continued collaboration will strengthen both specialties and safeguard high-quality care.

The RCoA is proud to have been the principal home for intensive care medicine and of our role in establishing FICM in 2010, alongside seven other parent Colleges. We are pleased to support the transition to the College of Intensive Care Medicine, a positive step forward for patients, members and the specialty.

The transition from Faculty to College status represents the natural next step in the evolution of intensive care medicine. It is a recognition of the specialty’s maturity, its growing workforce, and its central role within the NHS.
