Swapping theatres for the open ocean:

my life at sea so far

Author: Dr Georgina Olenicz

Growing up in one of the furthest towns from the sea in the UK, sailing was never on my radar as a hobby, let alone as a way of life. However, at 30 years old, I find myself living on my 34 ft sailing boat with my husband Jay, sailing around the world.

I count myself very fortunate in that I love my job. I have spent the last three years in North East London completing core anaesthetics training and have had a truly fantastic time, but I’ve also always had the desire to travel. At the end of core training, I found myself in a rare position whereby I currently have no dependents or mortgage, a natural break in my training, and the ability for Jay to work remotely. Working in healthcare, and in anaesthetics/intensive care specifically, we regularly see at first hand how life and good health can’t be taken for granted.
