Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
After qualifying Bramwell joined the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC). Through the Second World War he was promoted from Lt. to Capt. to Major. From 1951 to 1953 he served in Korea, after which he was promoted to Lt.-Col. (Senior Specialist Anaesthetist) and awarded the MBE. In 1954 he was appointed Adviser in Anaesthesia to the War Office. On completing his RAMC service with the rank of Col. in the mid-1960s, he was appointed a Consultant Anaesthetist at Hastings Hospital Group and remained in this post until his retirement in 1979.
Professional interests and activities
He was a member of the Royal Society of Medicine and of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland. About 1954 he was appointed Hon. Professor of Anaesthesia at the University of Hiroshima, Japan. He published in 1954 on his visit to a US Army Hospital in Japan.
Other biographical information
He married Melody Colson in 1948 and they had two children. After Melody died in 1999, Stephen had a second marriage to Aileen Sleziak in 2001. He died at the age of 97, survived by his children and second wife.
