College Workforce Census 2020 – call for contribution

Published: 06/01/2020

Today, the College is sending out the Medical Workforce Census 2020 to all National Clinical Directors to complete. We strongly encourage everyone to get involved in this important call for data and to support their clinical directors and College tutors in providing the requested data. Complete data is essential for monitoring evolving gaps, enabling the College to make official bodies aware of the anaesthetic workforce crisis and ensuring our workforce position is based on robust information.

The data from the Census 2020 will help identify key issues including how a shortfall in the anaesthetic workforce impacts on surgery waiting lists. Reliable and up to date data will help raise our concerns further and ensure that what the College says when campaigning for change and collaborating with key partners and national government is evidence-led, authoritative and independent.

In 2015, the College census received a 100% response rate testifying the willingness and professionalism of the anaesthetic community and recognising the importance of this College activity. The increasing challenges in the NHS make the collection of complete data through Census 2020 more important than ever. Therefore, the College calls out to its fellows and members to encourage their department to complete the census and raise awareness of this important task. The census closes in early February and we urge every single anaesthetic department to contribute.
