Obituary - Dr John Michael Manners

Dr John Michael Manners MB ChB FFARCS

1929-2022

 John Michael Manners was born in Redruth in Cornwall to George and Hilary.  He attended Truro School before studying medicine at Leeds University. 

On qualifying John spent several years as a ship’s Medical Officer travelling extensively and two years as a GP in Australia. After a period as a senior registrar in Birmingham, John moved to Southampton General Hospital arriving with a young family in 1966.  During this time, he continued to travel to international anaesthetics conferences and wrote numerous articles and enjoyed racing his vintage wayfarer dingy at Hythe Sailing Club. 

John’s achievements included an instrumental role in the establishment of the Southampton cardiothoracic unit.  He completed his career with the NHS as a consultant cardiac anaesthetist in 1989. 

On retirement John continued to carry out medical legal work as well as a role supporting the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists annual conferences. 

Retirement allowed John to spend more time in his garden and he also developed an interest in Cathedral architecture as well as a loyalty to London Irish rugby team. 

John died from old age on 15 November 2022.  He leaves three children.
