New RCoA Exams approved by the GMC

Published: 17/09/2026

We are delighted to announce that the new Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) examination has received formal approval from the General Medical Council (GMC).

This achievement marks an important milestone in ensuring that our FRCA examination continues to meet the highest standards of postgraduate medical assessment and reflect the evolving needs of modern anaesthetic practice.

This accomplishment reflects the considerable collaborative effort of colleagues across the College and would not have been possible without the expertise, time and commitment of our examiners, examination leads and examinations team.

Implementation Timeline

The new FRCA examination will be introduced from July 2027.

To support candidates during this change, the first year of implementation will be a transition year. This will enable candidates who have a banked Primary FRCA OSCE or SOE to complete the remaining legacy component. Detailed information provided on the transition arrangements includes guidance on examination availability, sitting opportunities and progression pathways.

For trainers and supervisors supporting candidates, we also have guidance resources available.

Further updates and guidance will continue to be shared as we approach implementation and if you have any questions, please get in touch
