RCoA welcomes funded commitment for critical care services in Wales

The College welcomes the announcement from the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services, Vaughan Gething, of a national programme to redesign critical care services in Wales, enabled by £15 million of recurrent funding.

Ongoing concerns about critical care services in Wales were raised by members of the Welsh Board of the College earlier this year and our President, Dr Liam Brennan, and the Dean of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, Dr Carl Waldmann, subsequently made joint-written representation to the Cabinet Secretary.

We are pleased that the Cabinet Secretary has listened to the concerns of frontline clinicians and put in place a programme that can begin to address the long-term issues affecting critical care in Wales.

The Chair of the College’s Welsh Board, Dr Abrie Theron, has been asked to lead the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit workstream of the review and the College looks forward to constructive engagement with this long-term programme.

The statement from the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine responding to today’s announcement can be read here.
