Professional life and career
Postgraduate career
Was required to give anaesthetics during house officer posts in Maidenhead (1947-9) and became “fascinated by the art”. He was resident anaesthetist in Winchester (1949-50) and registrar in Windsor (1950-3) before going to the Hammersmith Hospital as SHO, registrar & senior registrar (1953-9), and spending a year in Falum, Sweden (1955-6). He was appointed consultant anaesthetist to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester and Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital, Alton in 1959, working until 1974 when he took early retirement because of ill-health.
Professional interests and activities
With publications on local and regional anaesthesia, Noel was considered an expert in epidural anaesthesia & analgesia. A highly respected and well liked colleague with a good sense of humour, he was very supportive of trainee staff.
Other biographical information
Married Sheila Gray (also a doctor) in 1957, and they had one son & two daughters. His hobbies included travel, languages (especially Swedish in which he was proficient), and good literature, writing short stories in retirement. ‘Home brewing’ was another interest, and he published on the benefits of a small regular intake of alcohol.
