Details about our collaborative working with the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists (HKCA)

Hong Kong

We received an approach from the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists (HKCA) in 2017 to provide assistance with development of their new competency based curriculum.  In addition, we provided training for trainers, particularly focusing on trainee assessment ahead of the curriculum launch.

Curriculum Review:

A small working group was convened to review the Hong Kong Curriculum in an advisory capacity, before the curriculum was presented to the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine.  The curriculum was subsequently approved and launched in July 2018.

Training the Trainer Course:

An RCoA Faculty went to Hong Kong to run two Training the Trainer courses from 13 – 16 October 2017.  The course covered a variety of topics, including:

  • Teaching in the workplace
  • Trainee Assessment
  • Providing Feedback
  • The Final MCQ FRCA Examination
  • Appraisal and reflective practice
  • Professionalism
  • Doctors in Difficulty

The course was well received with positive feedback.

Examinations

It was agreed that HKCA trainees would sit the Final FRCA MCQ examination as part of their in country assessments.  The first examination took place in March 2018 and takes place concurrently with the UK sitting, to ensure the integrity of the examination.
